Neami has joined leading LGBTQIA+, health and mental health organisations in supporting the inclusion of three new topics – gender, variations of sex characteristics, and sexual orientation – in the 2026 Census.
The joint statement calls on the federal government to end the current uncertainty and focus on prioritising health and wellbeing above all else.
LGBTQIA+ people often face barriers in accessing support. To help provide the supports they need, health services, programs and policy makers need accurate, up-to-date and comprehensive data.
Including these topics in the Census is crucial because there are few other sources that provide the necessary data for effective health and social planning. Census data is especially valuable for detailed socio-economic analysis, information on small geographic areas and tracking long-term trends.
At Neami, we welcome, support and celebrate LGBTQIA+ people and communities. We aim to offer a place where everyone can be their authentic self while seeking support.
