10 years of Neami’s Youth Residential Recovery Services

08 August 2024

Neami’s Youth Residential Recovery Services (YRRS) are celebrating a decade of supporting young people aged 16 to 25 years old. Young people live on-site at the YRRS for up to 12 months, during which time our dedicated team support their self-development journey. Funded by the Victorian Government Department of Health, Neami operates four YRRS locations across Melbourne: Moorabbin, Hawthorn, Noble Park, and Seaford.

The multi-disciplinary team at the YRRS includes community support workers and people with lived experience of mental health recovery. The YRRS was created to provide goal-oriented, evidence-based recovery programs with strong accountability for young people.

Aida Gogelyte, the current service manager at Moorabbin who has been with the team since its opening, highlights the collaborative nature of the program,

“We work together on key areas of self-development so they can feel capable and confident to live a life that has meaning and purpose.”

The YRRS follows the Peer Positive Culture model, encouraging young people to develop self-worth, dignity, and responsibility, while embracing the values of helping and caring for others. We also focus on practical skills that will benefit young people after they leave, such as cooking, budgeting, resume writing, and gardening.

Aida adds, “I believe that every young person deserves a second chance and our programme provides them with the opportunity to rebuild their lives. It’s important for young people to have access to these supports. Generally, when we meet them, they are quite disconnected from social networks.”

Our program helps young people build and maintain connections within the local community, family, and social networks, and supports them in pursuing educational and vocational opportunities.

In this video, you’ll meet Aida and learn about the important work her team does to support young people in Moorabbin.
