About Early Psychosis Psychosocial Support

Early Psychosis Psychosocial Support (EPPS) is a free mental health service for young people who have recently experienced psychosis or early changes in how they see or understand reality.

We provide support for up to two years and can meet you at home, at the service, in your community, at the service, over the phone or via video chat.

Who is this for?

EPPS supports young people who:

  • are aged 12-25
  • live in the West Moreton region
  • are currently engaged with the EPS Queensland Health Early Psychosis team
  • would benefit from non-clinical community-based support
  • are experiencing psychosis for the first time, or
  • have been diagnosed with a psychotic condition in the past 12 months, or
  • have been prescribed antipsychotic medication for the first time within the past 12 months.

We welcome young people from multicultural and multifaith backgrounds, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, refugees and people who identify as sexually and gender diverse.

What is psychosis?

Psychosis is a word we use to describe a range of different experiences that can feel confusing or hard to make sense of.

When you’re going through psychosis, it can be hard to understand what’s real and what isn’t. You might hear or see things that other people can’t, or have confusing or jumbled thoughts.

Psychosis is more common than many people realise, particularly in young people.

You’re not alone

We know that psychosis can feel overwhelming or isolating, but you’re not alone. We’ll work together with you to make sense of what’s happening, focus on your strengths and build skills to help you live the life you want.

What to expect

If you consent to support, you will be referred to the service. An EPPS worker will respond to the referral within 48 hours.

EPPS is a safe and welcoming service, where we work with you in ways that respect and support you.

Putting your needs first

We provide support for up to two years, working with you at your own pace to:

  • understand what’s important to you
  • build on your strengths
  • be supported by someone with lived experience to explore what hope and confidence looks like for you
  • improve your mental health and wellbeing
  • support you to manage stress and tough emotions
  • strengthen your skills for everyday life
  • support you to explore and connect with your community
  • explore options for starting or getting back to study or work
  • link you up with other services if you want to connect with them.

Flexible support, your way

EPPS is delivered by an integrated team of Youth Peer Workers, Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing Workers and a Peer Lead. We can meet you at home, at the service, in your community, over the phone or via video chat.

We understand how important family and friends can be to a young person’s wellbeing.  We can help with building stronger connections with your (chosen) family, friends and community, to help you feel supported. We can also help you connect with other local services that you feel suit your needs.

How to access this service

We accept referrals from Queensland Health Early Psychosis teams (EPS) through West Moreton Hospital and Health Service.

Referrals from other Queensland Health services, such as Child and Youth Mental Health Services and adult mental health services, are coordinated through EPS.
