Last week, we celebrated the achievements of the 2024/25 Peer Cadet Program graduates.
Over the past ten months, peer cadets have developed their skills, confidence and understanding of Lived Experience peer work in structured and supportive environments. Many are now moving into ongoing roles within the community mental health sector.
The Peer Cadet Program is one of Victoria’s most successful Lived Experience workforce initiatives. It was established in response to recommendations from the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System, which called for additional pathways into the Lived and Living Experience workforce.
The program offers part-time, paid employment to people with lived and living experience who are studying a Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work. Cadets receive support from experienced peer mentors and program leads and are placed within teams where they can actively contribute, learn and grow.
Developing the Lived Experience workforce relies on collective effort. Neami is proud to deliver the program in partnership with Mind Australia, Each, Uniting Victoria Tasmania, cohealth, Wellways, Ballarat Community Health, Eating Disorders Victoria and ermha365. By working together, we are learning from one another and building stronger foundations for a supported, connected and sustainable workforce.
Lauren Naismith, Victorian Peer Cadet Program Lead at Neami National, shared, “The transformation we see in our cadets is remarkable. Over ten months, they develop their practice and confidence in a way that has a lasting impact, not just on their careers but also on the services and communities they go on to support.
“This program shows what’s possible when we stay true to the principles and values of Lived Experience, invest in meaningful employment pathways and work together across the sector.”
