Care Economy Collaborative Research Centre

Understanding the new terrain of leading and supporting a diverse interdisciplinary workforce delivering integrated community mental health support.

Summary

  • Lived Experience
  • Practice research
  • Service evaluations

Neami has formed a partnership with the Care Economy Collaborative Research Centre. This is a 10-year national collaborative research initiative headquartered at La Trobe University, bringing together over 50–60 partners, including universities, care providers, technology companies, government agencies, and research institutions, to improve care services across Australia.  Partners will collaborate to develop care technology, data solutions, and workforce innovations to address challenges such as rising demand, complex care needs, and workforce shortages.

Neami Project 1. Understanding the new terrain of leading and supporting a diverse interdisciplinary workforce delivering integrated community mental health support.

Neami’s first project in this partnership focuses on the leadership of interdisciplinary teams. We want to understand more about leading teams where we have a range of workforces bringing different worldviews to meet the needs of people. The project aims to explore:

  • what is involved in growing and sustaining the mental health lived experience workforce
  • the goals and benefits of interdisciplinary teams
  • how diverse staff experience the strengths and challenges in leading, supporting and sustaining these teams.

Between 20-40 Neami leaders and service managers, and industry experts, will be invited to participate in interviews and focus groups later this year. Some Neami staff are part of the project steering group.

Outcomes

We aim to develop practical sector guidance on the elements required to effectively grow and sustain mental health workforces, and to sustainably lead and support these teams and services, in order to support feasible and sustainable workforce growth.
