The Urgent Mental Health Care Centre (UMHCC) in Adelaide is marking five years of supporting the community with free, accessible mental health care. Since opening in March 2021, the Centre has supported more than 25,000 visits from people experiencing mental health crisis or distress.

Delivered by Neami National and funded by the Australian Government and SA Health, the UMHCC was the first service of its kind in the country. It provides a safe alternative to hospital emergency departments for people needing urgent mental health support. Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the UMHCC offers free, walk‑in care in a welcoming, lounge room‑style environment.

“For the past five years, the UMHCC has been a place the community can turn to in times of mental health crisis,” said Lainey Reynolds, Clinical Services Manager. “Having an alternative to emergency departments gives people choice, dignity and support when they need it most – and we’re proud to be part of that.”

The service, which has a ‘fusion’ staffing model, comprises of 50% clinical staff and 50% lived experience staff, with their own experiences of mental health challenges. This gives those seeking assistance access to clinical care and peer support in the same place. With a welcoming, non-judgemental approach, the team at the UMHCC works together to meet each person where they are, offering safe, responsive support when it’s needed most.

The impact of the UMHCC reflects the strength of collective effort, uniting Neami National, Recovery Innovations, SA Health, SA Ambulance Service, SA Police, and local community and health organisations to deliver a connected, compassionate system of care for people experiencing crisis.

The service is open to anyone aged 16 and over, with no need for an appointment, referral, Medicare card or Australian citizenship or residency.

The UMHCC is located at 215 Grenfell St, Adelaide. For more information, visit the UMHCC website or call (08) 8448 9100.
