Neami consumers explore freedom, rights and choices through art

Neami’s South Australian art group participants have showcased their work in a mixed media exhibition titled Art Unbound.

Neami was proud to present the exhibition, now in its 8th year, in partnership with the University of South Australia’s The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre.

Participating in Neami’s art programs supports people with mental health and wellbeing challenges to develop confidence, a sense of empowerment, identity and independence.

People of all skill levels benefit from a chance for self-expression using a range of art mediums.

About Art Unbound

“In this exhibition we take solace in the choices and rights we can influence. The act of making art is an act of freedom in itself. At times it can be difficult to find peace in our mind, body and soul, by placing our hand over our hearts, we explore and celebrate the lightness and openness that comes from moments of freedom and the endless imagination when set free from boundaries.”

Neami Arts Coordinator Vass Hay works closely with the artists, facilitators, and community partners to ensure the art programs foster confidence, identity, and empowerment through artistic expression.

At the exhibition launch, Vass reflected on art as a powerful tool for wellbeing. She said, “(art) offers a unique space for self-expression, healing, and emotional exploration, often conveying what words alone cannot.

“Through the creative process, individuals can process their thoughts and feelings, build confidence, and develop a deeper sense of self.

“The act of creating can be both cathartic and freeing, helping artists explore themes that may be difficult to verbalise.

“Our art programs also nurture connection, reducing social isolation and providing a supportive community where participants feel seen and valued.”

Adelaide locals can visit Art Unbound until Thursday 24 April 2025 at the Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre’s Kerry Packer Gallery.
