Neami’s Macarthur Accommodation and Access Program (MAAP) was recently featured in the local media.
Garry, a MAAP consumer, shared his experience of sleeping rough in The Camden Advertiser. Garry spent three years sleeping rough in Campbelltown before finally securing housing three months ago thanks to a collaborative approach between the Department of Human Services and the Macarthur Homeless Committee. The Macarthur Homeless Committee consists of several organisations including Housing NSW, Macarthur Community Mental Health, the Department of Human Services, Vinnies Case Management, Doorways for Youth and Neami.
Joshua Hewitt, Community Support Worker at MAAP, reflected on the experience of working to assist Garry to find housing. “Garry was referred to us by a contact at Centrelink. After assessing him we were able to support him into our crisis accommodation and for three months we worked together to complete his housing application and to engage with a GP to support his physical and mental health needs,” Joshua said. “Garry’s commitment to engaging with the MAAP team and turning his life around has seen him offered one of our transitional properties.”
