Health Promotion

Research indicates that those with a serious mental illness are more likely to smoke and to experience poor diet and a lack of physical activity. This has a significant impact on their overall health and wellbeing and an increased likelihood of developing illnesses such as diabetes, various cancers and cardio vascular disease. It also appears that diagnosis and treatment of these conditions may be delayed in people with mental illness contributing to substantially higher levels of morbidity and mortality for those with a mental illness than the general population.

In recognition of the increased susceptibility of those with a serious mental illness to have co-occurring health issues, Neami has introduced a Health Promotion program, which includes state-based Health Promotion Officers (HPO). Site based Health Promotion Champions also support Neami to achieve the aims of the Health Promotion program.

Consumer Advisory Group Review

A key recommendation identified in the Consumer Participation and Leadership Report (2010) was to conduct a review of Neami’s existing Consumer Advisory Groups (CAG).  A team of project workers, with a lived experience of mental illness commenced work on the project in June 2011.  The key aims of the Consumer Advisory Group Review Project include:

  • To consult key stakeholders about the scope, functioning and improvements required to support the CAGs to meet their stated aims and role
  • To identify areas for improvement
  • To develop a plan to strengthen CAG functioning within Neami

The project will be completed by the end of the year.

Consumer Complaints and Feedback Process Review

A key recommendation identified in the Consumer Participation and Leadership Report (2010) was to develop a robust Complaints and Feedback process.  A team of project workers, with a lived experience commenced work on the project in June 2011.  Through consulting widely with staff, consumers and carers the project team will aim to develop a responsive, fair, and easy to use complaint and feedback process.

The project will be completed by the end of the year.
